Grief Counseling for Men in Riverside County

Loss Changes Things. Talking About It Helps.

Some losses are harder to carry than you expected. Whether you lost a parent, a partner, a child, a friend or a way of life, you’ll get support from licensed clinicians and sit in group with other men who have been through loss of their own, all while living at home.

At a glance

  • Can look like anger, numbness, overworking or drinking more, not only tears.
  • Support through individual counseling, group and skills for the hard days.
  • Care levels: PHP, IOP and outpatient.
  • Cost questions? We work with most major insurance plans.

Grief in men

Why Men Often Grieve Quietly

Many men are raised to be the steady one. When someone dies, they handle the arrangements, look after everyone else and go back to work, all without stopping to feel much of anything. The grief doesn’t disappear. It tends to come out sideways as irritability, restless energy, long hours on the job or a few more drinks at night.

Loss isn’t only about death, either. A divorce, the end of a career, a serious injury or losing a home can bring the same heavy mix of sadness, anger and guilt. There’s no correct way or timeline to grieve. But if months have passed and you still feel stuck, or the loss has stirred up low mood or old trauma, counseling can help you work through it instead of around it.

What grief can look like

Signs Grief Has Become Hard to Manage

Grief comes in waves, and some days are better than others. It may be time to get support when these signs hang on or keep you from functioning at work or at home.

  • Feeling numb, detached or stuck in a fog
  • Waves of anger at yourself, others, God or the person you lost
  • Guilt over things said, left unsaid or done differently
  • Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or nightmares
  • Eating far more or far less than usual
  • Exhaustion, headaches, tight muscles or getting sick more often
  • Replaying the loss or the final days over and over
  • Avoiding places, people or reminders tied to the loss
  • Losing interest in work, hobbies or friends
  • Drinking or using to get through the evenings

Treatment at Entelos

How Grief Counseling Works at Entelos

We begin by getting to know you and what you’ve lost, along with anything else that has surfaced since, like low mood, anxiety or heavier drinking. Your plan is built from there. In one-on-one counseling you’ll have room to say the things you haven’t said out loud yet, sort through guilt or regret, and figure out how to honor the person or the life you lost while still moving forward.

Group sessions with other men are a big part of the work. Sitting with guys who have buried a father, lost a marriage or watched a friend die makes it easier to stop pretending you’re fine. You’ll also pick up practical ways to get through anniversaries, holidays and the rough nights, and we pay attention to sleep, stress and routine, which grief tends to knock loose. If depression or trauma is part of the picture, we treat that too. We also offer grief support groups, where you can talk with other men who have lived through a loss and know how heavy it gets.

Questions

Common Questions

Is it normal to still be struggling months after a loss?

Yes. Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, and it often hits harder after the funeral is over and everyone else goes back to normal. If it’s still getting in the way of sleep, work or relationships, that’s a good reason to reach out.

How is grief counseling different from regular therapy?

Grief counseling centers on the loss itself and how it’s affecting you now. It uses many of the same tools as other therapy, and if the loss has brought on depression, anxiety or trauma symptoms, we treat those as part of the same plan.

Do I have to talk in group if I'm not ready?

No. Plenty of men listen for a while before they share. Hearing others talk about their own losses is often what makes opening up feel possible.

Can I use insurance for grief counseling?

We work with most major insurance plans. Check your coverage and our admissions team will explain what your plan includes.
