ADHD in grown men

It Didn’t Go Away When You Grew Up

ADHD is often thought of as a kid’s problem, but plenty of men carry it into adulthood, and many were never diagnosed in the first place. As an adult, the hyperactivity tends to turn inward. Instead of bouncing off the walls, you feel restless in meetings, start five things and finish none, or drift off halfway through a conversation with your partner.

Over time, that adds up. Men with untreated ADHD often get labeled careless or unmotivated at work, and eventually they start believing it. Arguments at home can follow from forgotten plans or impulsive spending. Some men cope with caffeine, alcohol or other substances, and anxiety or depression often settle in alongside the ADHD. Treating all of it together tends to work better than chasing one piece at a time.

  • Frustration that flares fast and burns hot
  • Putting things off until the last possible minute
  • A long-running sense that you’re falling short of what you can do

Treatment at Entelos

How We Help Men Manage Adult ADHD

We start with an assessment that looks at attention and focus along with mood, anxiety, sleep and any drinking or drug use, since those can mimic ADHD or make it worse. From there, a psychiatric provider can talk with you about whether medication makes sense and, if you decide to try it, monitor how it’s working and adjust as needed.

Medication can help, but it doesn’t teach you how to run your day. That’s where therapy comes in. In individual sessions and skills groups, you’ll work on practical tools for planning, organizing, managing time and cooling down before frustration takes over. CBT helps with the self-critical thinking many men have built up after years of being told to just try harder. We also look at sleep, exercise and daily routine, because the basics have a lot to do with how well your focus holds up.

Questions

Common Questions

Can I be diagnosed with ADHD for the first time as an adult?

Yes. Many men reach their thirties, forties or later before anyone connects the dots. An evaluation looks at your history going back to childhood and at what’s happening now, so you get a clear picture instead of a guess.

Is medication the only option?

No. Medication is one tool, and some men choose not to use it. Skills work, therapy and changes to sleep and routine all help. If you’re curious about medication, a psychiatric provider will walk you through the pros and cons.

Why would I need more than a prescription?

Years of living with ADHD leave habits and beliefs behind, like avoiding hard tasks or assuming you’ll fail. Therapy and skills practice address those patterns, and many men also have anxiety or depression that needs attention of its own. See how we treat anxiety.

Will my insurance help pay for ADHD treatment?

We work with most major insurance plans. Share your details on our insurance page and the admissions team will look into your coverage and walk you through it.
