Anxiety in men

Often Hidden Behind Stress, Anger or Staying Busy

Plenty of men living with anxiety would never use that word. They’d say they’re stressed, wound up or just can’t shut their brain off at night. It might come out as snapping at your kids, checking your phone every few minutes, or running through worst-case scenarios on the drive to work.

Anxiety also lives in the body. A tight chest, a clenched jaw, an upset stomach or a racing heart can send men to the doctor convinced something is physically wrong. Some cope by working nonstop, avoiding situations that set them off, or having a few drinks to take the edge off. Those habits can bring short-term relief, but over time they usually make the anxiety stronger.

How We Help With Anxiety

We start with an assessment so we understand what kind of anxiety you’re facing, what sets it off and what else might be going on, like trouble sleeping, low mood or drinking. Your plan is built from that. Much of the work uses cognitive behavioral therapy, which teaches you to catch anxious thoughts, question them and respond differently, step by step.

Men’s group sessions give you a place to hear how others handle the same pressure, and they often make anxiety feel less like a personal failure. You’ll practice ways to calm your body, manage stress and get your sleep back on track. If medication could help, a psychiatric provider will go over the options and coordinate them with your therapy.

Questions

Common Questions

Is what I'm feeling anxiety or just normal stress?

Stress usually has a clear cause and fades once the situation passes. Anxiety tends to stick around, show up without an obvious reason and spill into your sleep, body and relationships. If you can’t tell which it is, a conversation with our admissions team is a good place to start.

Can panic attacks be treated in an outpatient program?

Yes. Many men with panic attacks do well in outpatient care, where they learn what’s happening in the body during an attack and practice ways to ride it out. Your assessment will help decide which level of support fits.

Do I have to talk in front of a group if I have social anxiety?

You won’t be forced to share before you’re ready. Many men with social anxiety start out listening, and over time group becomes one of the safest places to practice speaking up.

What will anxiety treatment cost me?

That depends on your plan, but we work with most major insurance plans. Request a benefits check and admissions will let you know what to expect.
